SheYakFishr, Installing an Eagle Cuda
168 FF on a Hobie OB
|
About two weeks ago, I installed an Eagle Cuda 168 Fish Finder in my Hobie Outback. First.. I went to Radio shack and purchased a RC car battery pack (9.6v)- complete with charger (will go back and get another battery pack eventually for a back up), (I'm thinking the combo was around 19.99). What is funny... the employee there said it would NOT work. I smiled and paid for it and left. I KNEW that it would work after reading too many articles in the Hobie Forum & KFS site. My next purchase was.. a large container of clear silicone with the dispenser gun and misc items from Halls Hardware to put it all together. As you can see in the one pic, I globbed a large area of it in front of the OB's sail mast. After I slowly sunk the transducer into the silicone (so it would not make any bubbles) I added the piece of foam around it for protection. The next evening.. before I ran the wires to the rest of the FF... I added the duct tape. I did this so if per chance the transducer loosened up, while the yak was upside down on my vehicle.. hopefully the tape would hold it from flopping around. (Two weeks later.. it's still all holding on). Next I made a bottom to the fish finder out of a piece of plastic (which I cut to fit - sorry took no pics of that) and placed screws, washers & nuts in the three holes to secure it. I also threaded a pvc screw which has two female ends and secured one end inside the plastic base section with silicone and two nuts.. attached it into the receiver that I placed on a piece of wood (temporary until I can think of another way to attach it) and inserted it into the tray. I turned it on... and it worked! Of course.. I had to wait until I got it on the water to find out IF it REALLY worked. After I was on the water with it... I took a pic of the FF and it shows that I was in 5'8" of water and you can also see a couple of good size fish by my second finger. After I got everything connected, I used a thick baggie to put the battery pack and wires in and placed it into the little hatch bag that came with the OB. I secured the hatch... and viola.. I was done! If I can install one... anyone can! :-) If you have any questions... let me know.. or if you want to take a look at it.. catch me before I head out.. or when I get back in. I will be happy to show you what I did! It works great!! Now.. I don't know how I fished without it! My favorite isn't necessarily to find fish.. it's using it to see the depth of the water. Of course... last but NOT least.. here is a picture of the "Ultimate Fishing Machine".. complete with "one eyed jack" pirate flag |
